Who we are

SPARC Europe is an alliance of European research libraries, library organisations and research institutions. We provide a voice for the community and the support and tools it needs in order to being about positive change to the system of scholarly communications.

Our members represent over 100 of Europe’s leading academic and research institutions. Membership is open to national and academic libraries, library organizations and research institutions in the region. Please show your support and commitment to bringing positive change to scholarly communications by joining us.

SPARC Europe collaborates with the international SPARC organisation based in Washington D.C. We develop Europe-focused initiatives under the direction of a Board of Directors and the SPARC Europe Director. Membership of SPARC Europe is open to national and academic libraries, library organizations and research institutions in the region.

Day-to-day management of SPARC Europe is under the care of the Director, Dr David Prosser, who is also responsible for implementing the strategy of SPARC Europe. Strategy is agreed with the SPARC Europe Board, an eminent group well-known within the European library community. The members are:

  • Paul Ayris, UK
  • Lars Björnshauge, Sweden
  • Paola Gargiulo, Italy
  • Hans Geleijnse, The Netherlands
  • Heather Joseph, SPARC, USA
  • Norbert Lossau, Germany
  • Jean-Francois Lutz, France
  • Christopher Pressler, UK
  • Bas Savenije (Chair), The Netherlands
  • Sylvia Van Peteghem, Belgium

Membership of the Board is formed from representatives of some national consortia and other supporting organisations, and includes members of both the academic and library communities. We hope that a balance has been struck to make the Board small enough to be effective but sufficiently representative.
