Analysis of funder Open Access policies around the world

In 2013, SPARC Europe analysed 48 mandatory funder polices listed in the ROARMAP registry according to which routes to OA the policy specifies. These results are shown below.

However, by the end of 2015, almost 3 years later, we had a total of 79 mandatory policies for funders (of which 20 were Gold) and 54 for funder and research organisations (of which 13 were Gold).

More insight can be given on this by the Pasteur4OA Project and Alma Swan who published Open Access Policy Effectiveness; A Briefing Paper for Research Funders. To further analyse this data, go to ROARMAP.

ROARMAP showed us the following in 2013:

Green (repository-based) OA required

Either Green or Gold routes satisfy policy requirements

Gold (journals) preferred where available

Funders permitting Gold OA article processing fees to be paid from research grant, or by a request to the funder = 20
