Open Access book publishing is a relatively new development in the Open Access Movement.
- Academic books are mainly written, published and used in the Humanities and in the Social Sciences.
- Open Access was mainly an issue in STM (journal publishing), uptake in Humanities and Social Sciences has been much lower.
- Library budget cuts and high journal subscription prizes have led to a serious decrease of library book acquisition which has harmed authors and publishers.
- Academic book publishing found itself in a crisis.
Open Access offers a new future for books
The OAPEN model offers a best practice: it developed a sustainable business model and it added value to book publishing by quality criteria (peer review process). OAPEN (Open Access Publishing in European Networks) is a collaborative initiative to develop and implement a sustainable Open Access publication model for academic books in the Humanities and Social Sciences. The OAPEN Library aims to improve the visibility and usability of high quality academic research by aggregating peer reviewed Open Access publications from across Europe.
