Daily management and implementation of the strategy are the responsibility of the European team:
Vanessa has 20 years’ international experience working with many leading university libraries worldwide. She also headed information and IT at a UN-affiliated international research institution in Vienna for 10 years.
She has also been programme and project manager to Europeana.eu
As the owner of Proud2Know, a consultancy that supports academic libraries, Vanessa also helps her clients create the skilled and innovative digital libraries of the future.
As Director to SPARC Europe, Vanessa is responsible for developing and implementing SPARC Europe’s Strategic Plan. She is working to make Open the default with Europe’s other Open Science organisations.

Dan Pescod is a public affairs professional with 15 years of EU and international experience. Dan was formerly International Campaigns Manager, then Head of Policy and Campaigns, for the Royal National Institute of Blind People in the UK. Dan has a track record of working on open access and social justice issues, most notably on behalf of the World Blind Union in the successful campaign for a copyright treaty for blind people, the so-called “Marrakesh Treaty”.
As Policy Advocate, Dan looks forward to furthering SPARC Europe’s policy aims at this crucial time for the EU’s copyright policy framework.

David Ball is owner of David Ball Consulting, specialising in scholarly communication and Open Science/Open Access. For two years he was Project Officer for SPARC Europe on two European Open Science projects: PASTEUR4OA (Open Access Policy Alignment Strategies for European Union Research) and FOSTER (Facilitate Open Science Training for European Research). He also created the SPARC Europe checklist How Open is Your Research?
While in Uganda he also worked with the Coalition of Uganda University Libraries (CUUL), funded by EIFL, on Open Access policy development and implementation.
At SPARC Europe, his focus is on OA policy case studies; mapping Open Science & Open Scholarship in Europe; exploring further advocacy tools and developing the SPARC Europe Champions Programme.

Angela Walseng has a decade-and-a-half experience in communications, and has spent the past several years working in Open Access publishing. She has worked extensively with researchers, universities and research institutes and funding bodies.
At SPARC Europe, her focus is on communication and knowledge exchange activities between SPARC Europe and its partners, networks and stakeholders.
