Recommendations for researchers and authors
- Strive to retain your copyright for publication with no restrictions as recommended by Science Europe in its New Science Europe Principles on Open Access Publisher Services
- Or do not to sign away all your rights to the publisher by adding an addendum to Copyright Transfer forms. For example see Harvard’s Addendum.
- Deposit your academic output, including journal articles in your Institutional Repository or in a subject repository like arXiv. You hereby increasingly comply with more and more funder requirements like Horizon 2020
- Take advantage of your institutional Open Access fund if you have one. If not, ask about getting one
- Check policy-compliant publishers against your local publishing or Open Access policy and strive to publish with them using SHERPA/RoMEO, for example
- If you are in the position not to publish in a hybrid journal, choose a fully Open Access journal
- Consider experimenting with creating a new Open Access publication be this a new journal or OA book. Your university press or library may well be able to support you
- If you are on the editorial board or review articles from a hybrid journal or publisher that is not transitioning enough towards Open Access in your opinion: reconsider serving on the board or reviewing articles of another journal that does
- Consider serving on the editorial board of an Open Access journal. For a list, see DOAJ
- Engage in the discussion of re-evaluating how research could be otherwise assessed with your research community and/or organisation
