Recommendations for funders

  • What policies already exist? An overview of current funder mandates can be found in the The Registry of Open Access Repository Mandates and Policies (ROARMAP)
  • When implementing an Open Access publishing policy, from a Pasteur4OA Open Access global policy analysis conducted in 2015, the following three OA policy recommendations were made for higher IR deposits:
    1. Mandate researchers to deposit
    2. Do not allow the waiving of deposits
    3. Link IR content to research evaluation
  • Include an Open Access clause in the funding regulations requiring grant recipients to make their research results available in Open Access via an Institutional Repository (IR) or via appropriate Open Access journals. For an up-to-date list of Open Access journals, see DOAJ
  • Make sure this clause reaches the researcher, who will certainly not read all of your documentation
  • Require Open Access for articles as well as books
  • Consider whether you wish to support the payment of hybrid publications or not and with a price cap
  • Make clear what amount of your funding should be directed to Open Access
